Concept of the Work
I began painting this piece with a mixture of feelings I couldn’t fully decipher. A complex and profound sensation overwhelmed me, tied to what society expects from a woman: to be judged, rated, or to avoid it by carefully walking over bricks of rules.
My art invites reflection on how emotions pass through us and what we choose to do with them. In this case, I couldn’t hide what I felt, and my strokes became the tool to release those repressed emotions. Thus, I conceived the elements that would be present in this work: a warm sunset and an intimate winery would set the scene for a story I longed to tell.
As my hands drew thin and thick lines, sliding my fingers through the shadows, the first curves began to appear. In that vineyard, so natural and beautiful, I spent moments filled with the sensation of smelling the grass and the trees laden with ripe grapes. The first curves of a very tight dress revealed a lady with her back to the viewer, absorbed in the contemplation of a horizon, in perfect harmony with her style and a hat that shielded her most intimate thoughts.
I remember that afternoon, as I worked, I felt her gaze resting on the sun, and my hands, trembling with nostalgia, yearned to create a transformation with each stroke. I wondered what technique would be right to capture that internal tension that couldn’t be expressed with just light and shadow.
Through the layering of charcoal, through moments of erasing and redrawing, I sought to convey concepts: indulgence, passion, and the instinct that lies within every human being. This canvas was becoming something as human as life itself.
I decided then that most of this space should be occupied by a winery. Here, new curves, wrapped in fabric, began to emerge, taking up almost the entire scene. I wanted to emphasize how both wine and love have the power to intoxicate the senses and break away from established norms. By joining the sunset scene with the winery, I managed to merge the process of transformation that society most questions..
In the woman’s gaze within the winery, I traced a special glimmer, and a hand that covered her mouth, partially hiding her face, as if she were playing with concealing a forbidden truth. In this half of the piece, the woman began to transform under my strokes, from what she was to what she dared to become: a figure possessed by unbridled passion, in a consummated act.
Her wedding ring remains visible and prominent in the scene, now turned into evidence of the breaking of a commitment, or perhaps a new vow to the absence of truth.
Upon completing this piece, I realized that what I had portrayed was not just a scene, but a true story of transformation and daring. With this work, I invite the viewer to feel and dive into the sensory experience of art, to let themselves be carried away by the emotions this piece awakens.
Author’s Notes
This piece represents two moments, victims of a process of transformation. On one side, the natural state: the lady gazing at the horizon, reflecting on the life she has led, turning her back to the observer, just like grapes that have yet to leave the vine.
On the other side, intoxicated by the pleasure of the senses, neither grape remains grape, nor is the lady still a lady.
